Based on current clinical research and consensus in the nutritional community, lycopene, selenium, zinc, vitamin E, isothiocyanates and phytosterols are all nutrients that have been proven to have a positive effect on maintaining normal metabolism of prostate cells and reducing the risk of disease. However, it must be made clear in advance that no nutrients can "cure" prostate problems, let alone replace regular treatment. They are at most an auxiliary for daily maintenance. They are not some mysterious imported ingredients, and most of them are hidden in the home-cooked dishes we often eat.
Two years ago, when I accompanied my family elders to the urology department for follow-up consultations, I met a 38-year-old programmer. His physical examination for two consecutive years showed that his PSA was slightly higher than the critical value. After a puncture examination, there was no cancer. It was chronic inflammation of the prostate caused by long-term sitting and a heavy diet of oil and salt. The doctor did not prescribe many medicines. I asked him to go back and adjust his diet. He was specifically told to eat at least one punch of cooked tomatoes every day, oysters or other shellfish 1-2 times a week, and grab a handful of raw pumpkin seeds as a snack every day. He persisted for 8 months and then went for a review. His PSA returned to the normal range, and his frequent urination was relieved a lot.
The nutrients that play a role in these ingredients are the nutrients we just mentioned. For example, the lycopene in tomatoes is a strong antioxidant, which can help prostate cells remove free radicals produced by metabolism and reduce inflammatory stimulation. It must be cooked and eaten. It is best to add some oil. The absorption rate can be 8-10 times higher than raw food, which is not much worse than the lycopene supplements you spend a lot of money to buy. Of course, it’s not that more supplements are better. Take selenium as an example. There is currently a lot of controversy in the academic community. Some cohort studies have shown that long-term insufficient selenium intake will increase the risk of prostate cancer. However, other studies have confirmed that excessive supplementation of selenium preparations will increase the incidence of aggressive prostate cancer. Therefore, there is no need to buy supplements. Eating asparagus, mushrooms, and seafood on a daily basis is enough.
Isothiocyanates in cruciferous vegetables, and phytosterols in pumpkin seeds and soybeans are all prostate-friendly nutrients that are easily overlooked. The older generation often says that eating pumpkin seeds nourishes the prostate. This is really not a folk remedy. Indeed, small-scale clinical studies have shown that a daily intake of about 50g of raw pumpkin seeds can help improve the symptoms of urinary discomfort in mild to moderate prostatic hyperplasia. The principle is that phytosterols can reduce edema of prostate cells and maintain a normal proliferation rhythm.
On the other hand, saw palmetto is currently on the market and is touted as a savior of the prostate. In fact, the current research conclusions are not uniform. Some studies show that it can improve hyperplasia symptoms, and some controlled trial results are no different from placebo. If you really have problems with frequent urination, urgency, and abnormal PSA, the first priority is to find a doctor to check the problem. Don't buy supplements by yourself, which will delay the condition. To put it bluntly, we ordinary men do not need to engage in any complicated nutritional supplements to maintain their prostates on a daily basis. They should not sit for long periods of time, do not hold back urine, drink less alcohol, add more tomatoes and cruciferous vegetables to meals, occasionally eat seafood, and grab a handful of pumpkin seeds as snacks. This can already provide sufficient nutritional support to prostate cells, which is more reliable than any IQ tax supplement.
