The core difference is that the two are not concepts of the same dimension at all - alternative therapies are a set of intervention methods that do not rely on the evidence-based system of modern mainstream medicine and are usually promoted as alternatives to conventional clinical treatments, while holistic health is a health management concept and practice framework that treats people as a unified whole of body, mind, and soul, rather than a combination of isolated symptoms. To put it bluntly, one is a specific "treatment tool" and the other is the "underlying logic" of looking at health. Their essential attributes are completely different.
I have been doing health management for almost 8 years, and the most common misunderstanding I have encountered is to equate the two. Not long ago, I met a girl with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. She asked me if she could use moxibustion and fasting instead of Euthyrox. She said that she read online that "overall health means not using Western medicine". This is a typical example of being led astray by marketing content. The adjustment plan I gave her at that time was to follow the doctor's instructions and take Euthyrox on time to stabilize her thyroid function. On this basis, she would add moxibustion twice a week to adjust her qi and blood, adjust her work and rest to reduce staying up late, and set aside one day a week to go hiking with friends to relax. Her related antibodies were rechecked for three consecutive months. It has dropped by almost half, and my overall mental state is much better. The core of this plan is the comprehensive adjustment of overall health. The moxibustion used in it is a complementary therapy. We have never thought of using it to replace conventional treatment, and naturally it cannot be said to be in the category of "alternative therapy".
Of course, there are indeed many voices in the industry who believe that alternative therapies are naturally tied to overall health, which is not entirely unreasonable. After all, the development path of mainstream medicine has become more and more segmented over the years, and it is easy to "treat headaches, headaches, and feet."
But the opposition is also very real. Too many businesses promoting alternative therapies are cutting leeks under the guise of "holistic health." For example, they claim that drinking fruit and vegetable juices can replace chemotherapy to treat cancer, and that congenital scoliosis can be cured by bone setting. In essence, they use "holistic health" as a marketing gimmick, deliberately blurring the boundaries between the two, and ultimately delaying patients' formal treatment. Several cases of this kind occur every year.
In fact, there is no need to put the two on opposite sides. The integrated health approach increasingly advocated internationally is to combine the evidence-based advantages of mainstream medicine with the all-dimensional perspective of overall health. The proven and effective parts of alternative therapies, such as acupuncture to relieve postoperative pain and mindfulness to regulate chronic stress, are all It can be added to the overall health plan as a supplement. There is no need to kill it with a stick. What you really need to be wary of are those propaganda that use the banner of "holistic health" and advocate that alternative therapies can cure all diseases. After all, the first step to be responsible for your health is to first understand whether the method you use is helping you to make up for your shortcomings, or whether it is risking your body.
