The most essential difference between the two is not things of the same dimension at all - alternative therapy is a general term for a type of non-standard therapy used to replace mainstream clinical intervention, while holistic health is a health management logic that treats people as complete individuals linked to physical, psychological and social factors, and their attributes are fundamentally different.
Take the most common nodule follow-up as an example. If someone detects type 3 breast nodules and refuses to follow the doctor's instructions for regular check-ups, instead spending tens of thousands of dollars on so-called "chest meridian dredging" and "medicinal application to disperse knots", hoping to use these methods to eliminate the nodules and avoid surgery. This is an alternative therapy, and the core is to replace formal clinical monitoring and intervention. If it is the same patient, he should undergo an ultrasound review every six months as required by the doctor. At the same time, he should adjust his habit of staying up late and sulking. When he is stressed at work, he should do mindfulness breathing to relieve his emotions. He should also pay attention to avoiding supplements with high estrogen content in his daily life. This is to use a holistic health approach to manage the condition. It will not negate the role of conventional medical treatment, but will fill the health loopholes outside of medical intervention.
Nowadays, many unscrupulous merchants like to package and confuse the two, packaging and selling alternative therapies that have no evidence-based basis as "holistic health solutions". There are really many people who fall into this trap. When I was doing health science popularization in the community, I met an old man. After he was diagnosed with early-stage lung cancer, he was tricked into doing "quantum detoxification", saying that it was a "holistic natural therapy" that did not require surgery. When he went to the hospital after a delay of three months, he had already progressed to the point where surgery was no longer possible. It was a pity.
Of course, the current industry does not completely kill alternative therapies. Many researchers in psychosomatic medicine also believe that as long as they are not used to replace conventional treatments, some alternative therapies that have been proven effective on a small scale can be included in the supplementary link of overall health. For example, patients with chronic low back pain without organic lesions can indeed achieve faster relief by taking painkillers and doing acupuncture and massage as directed by the doctor. To relieve discomfort, there is no need to classify these methods as "cheats" at this time; but more clinicians will still remind you that even if they are used as a supplement, you must communicate with your doctor in charge before using them to avoid conflicts with conventional treatments. For example, many people take statins and secretly take "herbal remedies" to protect the liver. Instead, they suffer drug-induced liver damage. This kind of case is really too common in the gastroenterology department.
In fact, ordinary people don’t have to worry about nouns. As long as you remember the core boundaries, you will not step into pitfalls: Anyone who tells you “Don’t go to the hospital, don’t take medicine, just use my method will get better.” No matter how many “holistic health” shells they use, they are essentially alternative therapies; and true holistic health will never let you give up formal treatments that have been proven to be effective, and will only help you make your life outside of treatment more comfortable.
