Severe cervicitis can turn into cancer within a few years

It usually takes 5-10 years for severe cervicitis to develop into cervical cancer, but individual differences vary greatly. Long-term untreated cervicitis may increase the risk of cancer, which is mainly related to persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus.

High-risk HPV infection is the core factor in cervical cancer, and about 70% of cervical cancers are caused by HPV16 and HPV18. If patients with severe cervicitis are combined with this type of infection, abnormal proliferation of cervical epithelial cells may occur during repeated damage and repair. It usually takes 3-8 years for cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 1 to grade 3, and it may take 1-5 years for grade 3 lesions to progress to invasive cancer. Continuous stimulation of inflammation accelerates this process, leading to a decline in local immune function and accumulation of genetic mutations.

Some patients may develop cancer in a shorter period of time, such as those with low immune function or other carcinogenic factors. AIDS patients and people who use immunosuppressants for a long time may have significantly accelerated progression of cervical lesions. Factors such as smoking, multiple sexual partners, and early sexual behavior can also synergistically promote cancer. Very few special pathological types, such as cervical adenocarcinoma, may show a faster progression rate.

It is recommended that patients with severe cervicitis undergo combined TCT and HPV screening every 6 months, and colposcopy biopsy is performed promptly if abnormalities are found. HPV vaccination can prevent new infections, but those already infected need to be monitored regularly. Maintaining a single sexual partner, quitting smoking, and managing chronic disease can help reduce risk. If symptoms such as contact bleeding or abnormal discharge occur, seek medical attention immediately.
